Spain's MITECO allocates €1.2bn to seven future green hydrogen clusters

The Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has provisionally allocated €1.21bn on aid for seven renewable hydrogen clusters. In total, the budget is expected to aid the development of 11 different facilities with a total electrolysis power of 2,278 MW. The Spanish autonomous community of Aragon is set to receive the largest amount of aid with €384m for two H2 valleys (with seven projects), followed by Andalusia (€304m), Castilla y León (€259m), Galicia (€170m) and Catalonia (€98m).  The proposal is still subject to technical allegations that may lead to changes in the list of selected candidates, according to the final score obtained by each project.

The projects have an electrolysis capacity for the production of green H2 that exceeds the minimum capacity of 100 MW and guaranteed purchase commitments for at least 60% of their production. The best-valued projects incorporate connected renewable generation facilities and undertake additional processes for the synthesis, storage and/or transport of green fuels derived from renewable hydrogen (SAF, e-methanol, ammonia, etc.). Within the projects that use electrolysis technology, those who opted for alkaline technology were preferred. Besides technical and economic merits, environmental criteria were also taken into account for the selection of the projects.

According to Spain’s Renewable Hydrogen Roadmap, the country aims to install 4 GW of green H2 by 2030. The National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) envisions 12 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030.
