The Spanish Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has announced the provisional results of the new call for aid for storage investment projects, pre-selecting 143 projects with a cumulated capacity of 2.4 GW/8.9 GWh, which will receive €840m (US$977m) of ERDF 2021-2027 funds (Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge press release, 27/10/2025).
- The projects include 81 hybrid storage projects, 42 stand-alone batteries projects, 17 thermal storage projects, and 3 pumped-storage projects.
- Of the 143 pre-selected projects, 39 would be located in Andalusia, 17 in Catalonia, 14 in the Valencian Community, 11 in Castilla-La Mancha, 11 in Extremadura, and 10 in Galicia.
- To receive financing, the projects must be completed before 31 December 2029.
This ERDF aid for energy storage adds to previous specific support programmes implemented by MITECO and IDAE under the NextGenEU funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (RTRP), estimated at around €730m (US$850m) for innovative hybrid, standalone, thermal and reversible pumping storage facilities, as well as R&D and island projects.
