Spain plans to tender 5.8 GW of grid access for renewables

The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has released the draft ministerial order to call an auction to award 5.8 GW of grid capacity to renewable and energy storage projects in 17 nodes of the electricity transmission network located across all regions of mainland Spain. The text is open to public consultation until 24 June 2022. The capacity at each of the nodes will be confirmed once the Spanish power transmission system operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE) releases its 2026 plan for the transmission network.

In 2021, renewables, accounted for 58% of Spain's installed capacity, with 67 GW, including 28 GW of wind (24%), 20 GW of hydro (18%), 17 GW of solar (15%) and 1.4 GW of biomass (1%).
