Spain plans 3 GW renewable auction in early 2017

The new Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda (MINETAD) of Spain has announced that a renewable auction would be held in the first half of 2017, offering 3,000 MW of new capacity on a competitive basis; the auction will be technology-neutral.

Spain is one of the European countries with the highest share of renewables in its power generation (over 41%) and the country is in line with its target of reaching 20% of renewables in its energy consumption by 2020 (over 17% in 2014). However, successive feed-in tariff cuts and disincentive measures have stopped renewable installations in recent years: in 2013, Spain installed only 28 MW of wind and 134 MW of solar; installations fell to 0 for wind and 49 MW for solar in 2015.

In addition, the MINETAD has announced further investment in energy efficiency. The National Energy Efficiency Fund will focus on efficiency programs for households with lower incomes. Spain will complete the roll out of mart meters; at the end of 2015, 14.49 million smart meters had been installed, i.e. 51% of the target.
