Spain launches first tender for access to the electricity grid offering 3.7 GW

The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco) has launched the call for the first tender for demands for access to the electricity grid. The mechanism answers to an excessive rise on the demands for access to the country’s electricity grid, making necessary to create a selection process to prioritize strategical projects.

The tender covers eight nodes of the transmission network, with a total access capacity of 3,681 MW, spread over six autonomous communities, namely Andalusia, Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country, selected due to their special industrial and strategic interest. The criteria to select the projects will be based on their contribution to decarbonisation (avoided greenhouse gas emissions), the volume of investment planned and the start date of energy consumption. The call will be open for a month, with Miteco having up to six months to select the awarded projects.

Spain’s power transmission system operator REE plans to invest nearly €7bn over the 2021-2026 period, including €5.7bn to reinforce its domestic transmission network.
