Spain launches €90m call for innovative pumped-storage hydro projects (1 GW)

The Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has launched its second call for innovative energy storage projects through reversible pumping, expecting to allow the installation of 1 GW of power and an additional 7 GWh of storage capacity (Spanish government press release, 02/01/2026).

  • Eligible projects may be new power plants, an expansion or modification of an existing project, or a conversion projects for conventional power plants into pumped storage.
  • The call represents the new edition of the BORALMAC programme and it plans to allocate €90m in subsidies to support the selected projects (€50m max. per project) through a competitive process.
  • The Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) will receive and evaluate the bids. Winners will be required to complete their projects before 30 June 2035.

The first call for innovative energy storage projects awarded €100m to four pumped-storage hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 2 GW. Spain aims to install 30 GW of electricity storage capacity by 2050 (Enerdata’s Global Energy Research).
