Spain allocates €818m (US$956m) to support 126 energy storage projects

The Spanish Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has selected 126 projects with a combined capacity of 2.2 GW/9.4 GWh on its call for aid for storage investment projects (MITECO press release, 30/12/2025).

  • The call received 1,750 applications, which forced an increase of almost 17% in the initially planned allocation of €700m (US$818m) to €818m (US$956m) from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF 2021-2027) across the 126 projects.
  • Among the selected projects there 69 hybrid projects, 39 standalone batteries, 15 thermal storage projects and 3 pumped-storage projects

This ERDF aid for energy storage adds to previous specific support programmes implemented by MITECO and IDAE under the NextGenEU funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (RTRP), estimated at around €730m (US$850m) for innovative hybrid, standalone, thermal and reversible pumping storage facilities, as well as R&D and island projects.
