The Spanish government has allocated an additional €415m (US$484m) to finance national green hydrogen auctions, as the country will participate in the European auction-as-a-service (AaaS) mechanism of the Innovation Fund activated by the European Hydrogen Bank. The funds will be directed to the production of renewable hydrogen of non-biological origin (RFNBO) (€278.6m, or US$325m) and to support the production of hydrogen RFNBO (limited to projects that supply the maritime and aviation sector with RFNBO) (€136.4m, or US$159m).
The funds add to the original pot of €400m (US$466m) approved by the European Commission earlier in 2025, which in November 2025 issued its first €126m (US$147m) to two projects totalling 160 MW of capacity that missed out on the EU-wide auctions.
