South Australia selects almost 13 GW of wind and solar projects in Whyalla

The local government of South Australia has selected four renewable project proposals totalling almost 13 GW of wind and solar, to progress in the Whyalla West Release Area in South Australia, Australia (South Australian government press release, 19/10/2026). Under the state’s renewable energy legislation, the selected proponents gain the exclusive right to apply for Renewable Feasibility Licences and undertake the detailed technical, commercial and environmental studies needed to determine whether their projects can proceed. The proposals correspond to:

  • Windlab: up to 6 GW of wind and solar (Whyalla West project), with a first stage that could include 600 MW-1 GW of wind and battery storage, and could be built by the early 2030s.
  • Altra Energy: 4.7 GW of wind and solar.
  • Heron Energy: 1.6 GW of wind.
  • Neoen: 360 MW of solar.

A feasibility licence is valid for up to five years and allows technical, commercial and environmental studies. Construction and operation require a separate Renewable Energy Infrastructure Licence. All proposals remain subject to further assessment, consultation and approvals.

Renewables supplied 77% of the South Australia’s net electricity generation in 2025, against a target of 100% net renewables by the end of 2027.
