South Africa will launch renewable energy contract round by November 2018

The South African government plans to launch the next bidding round for renewable power projects outstanding power purchase agreements (PPAs) in November 2018. This round fits into the framework of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) and is forecasted to unlock investments worth up to ZAR 50bn (US$3.9bn).

The latest bidding round tool place in April 2018: 27 wind and solar power plant projects with a total combined capacity of 2,305 MW were selected and the total amount of the contracts reached US$4.42bn.

If implemented, this new round will help the country to make a significant leap forward in the renewable sector after years of hiatus. The previous government favoured nuclear projects over renewable energies and the signing of the 27 outstanding PPAs was pushed back because of the troubled financial situation of the state-run utility Eskom, which would be the buyer of the allocated electricity.
