The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy of South Africa has released a Request for Proposal (RfP) for the procurement of 2,600 MW under the Renewable Energy IPP Procurement Programme Bid Window 5. Of the 2,600 MW capacity, 1,000 MW would be from solar photovoltaic and 600 MW from wind. Bids are open until 4 August 2021. The South African government expects to release four more requests for proposals within the next 12 months, including 2,600 MW from renewable energy, 3,000 MW from gas, 1,500 MW from coal, and 513 MW from battery storage.
In addition, South Africa has selected eight preferred bids to provide 1,845 MW of power capacity as part of the government’s Risk Mitigation IPP Procurement Programme. The country received 28 bids with a potential capacity of 5,117 MW. The eight selected projects are developed by Turkey’s Karpowership (3 bids), Mulilo Total, Oya Energy Hybrid Facility, Umoyilanga Energy and Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power. In addition, three more bids totalling 150 MW remain to be evaluated.
