South Africa awards generation licences for 890 MW of solar PV capacity

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has granted generation licences for four solar PV projects under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), representing a combined generation capacity of approximately 1 GWdc (NERSA press release, 07/07/2026).

Red Rocket has secured licences for thre projects:

  •  Sculptor Energy, with a generation capacity of 278 MWdc and a contracted capacity of 240 MWdc, in the Mpumalanga province of eastern South Africa;
  • Springhaas Solar Facility 1, which has a generation capacity of 277 MWdc and a contracted capacity of 240 MWdc;
  • Springhaas Solar Facility 6, with a generation capacity of 206 MWdc and a contracted capacity of 170 MWdc. Both facilities will be located in South Africa’s Free State.

The fourth licensed project is Engie's Corona Energy, which has a generation capacity of 288 MWdc and a contracted capacity of 240 MWdc, located in South Africa’s Free State.

The combined contracted capacity of the four projects amounts to 890 MWdc.

South Africa targets the addition of 22 GW of wind and solar over 2025-2030, made up of 7.3 GW of wind, 10 GW of solar PV, and 4.5 GW of rooftop PV. It has the objective to reach a net zero energy system by 2050 but is delaying its coal phaseout due to severe strain on the power grid. Coal dominates the power mix (83% in 2025), with a share dropping by 10 points since 2010 (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
