South Africa awards 890 MW of new solar PV capacity

South Africa has announced the appointment of additional Preferred Bidders to deliver 890 MW of solar PV capacity (South African Government News Agency, 15/12/2025). According to the statement, “with the latest announcement, total capacity procured under Bid Window 7 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) now stands at 3,940 MW, to be delivered through 18 solar PV independent power producer (IPP) projects.”

South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy said that the additional projects under Bid Window 7 stemmed from strong market interest, which attracted 48 bidders offering a combined 10.2 GW of capacity, more than double the amount originally requested.

Three of the projects were awarded to Red Rocket South Africa: Rondebosch Solar Park, Springhaas Solar Facility 1, and Springhaas Solar Facility 6, all located in the Free State province. The fourth project, Corona Solar PV, is located in the North West province and is led by ENGIE.

Launched in 2010, the REIPPPP is South Africa’s primary mechanism for attracting private investment into renewable power generation. The first projects under the programme became operational in 2012.
