Singapore to import 1.4 GW of low-carbon power from Indonesia

The Singaporean Government has announced plans to issue new conditional approvals to import 1.4 GW of low-carbon electricity from two solar power plants in Indonesia to support its energy needs. The conditional approvals for the 1.4 GW power will be granted to the consortia of TotalEnergies-RGE and Shell-Vena, for their respective projects with an estimated combined value of around $20bn. The electricity from the projects should be transmitted via a common subsea transmission cable system which is to be jointly developed by the consortium. The deal is expected to secure supply of clean electricity powered by solar PV and battery energy storage system for Singapore.

In September 2023, Singapore's Energy Market Authority (EMA) already gave a conditional approval for five companies to import 2 GW of low-carbon electricity from Indonesia. The companies proposed to install about 11 GW peak of solar PV capacity and 21 GW battery storage capacity in Indonesia, expected to become operational by the end of 2027. The agreement is expected to be upgraded to conditional licences by the end of 2024.
