Siemens Energy wins order for two CCGT power projects (3.6 GW) in Saudi Arabia

Harbin Electric International, the EPC contractor for the Rumah 2 and Nairyah 2 CCGT power projects (1.8 GW each) in Saudi Arabia, has awarded Siemens Energy a US$1.6bn order to provide key technologies for these projects. Under the terms of the agreement, Siemens Energy will supply six SGT6-9000HL gas turbines, four SST6-5000 steam turbines, eight SGen6-3000W generators, two SGen6-2000P generators, and associated auxiliary equipment, that will be manufactured at the Siemens Energy Dammam Hub in Saudi Arabia. The project also includes long-term (25-year) maintenance agreements for the power plants, which will add 3.6 GW of power to the national grid, enough to supply around 1.5 million homes. Power plants will initially operate in simple cycle mode in 2027, transitioning to full CCGT operation in 2028.

The Rumah 2 and Nairyah 2 projects are developed by a consortium of TAQA, JERA and Al Bawani Capital, which signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) in November 2024. Saudi Arabia aims to reduce the use of liquid fuels for power generation, to reach a power mix shared between renewables (50%) and gas (50%) by 2030.
