Shell, Eneco bid for Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind project (Netherlands)

Global oil and gas company Shell has teamed up with the Dutch energy company Eneco and the offshore wind project developer Van Oord and set a special company, the Witwind consortium, to bid for the construction and operation of the Hollandse Kust Zuid 3 and 4 offshore wind projects, in the Dutch part of the North Sea. The wind parks would have a total capacity of 750 MW and construction would start in 2023.

Earlier in March 2019, the Swedish power company Vattenfall also announced its intention to participate in the tender. The company is already involved in the development of the 700 MW Hollandse Kust Zuid 1 and 2 contiguous projects and intends to increase its presence in the Dutch offshore wind sector. Vattenfall hopes to achieve economies of scale if all the projects are combined, which would thus bring significant benefits in terms of cost reductions. Vattenfall secured the rights to develop the Hollandse Kust Zuid 1 and 2 wind parks under the framework of the first Dutch subsidy-free public offshore wind tender issued by the Dutch government in March 2018. Upon completion, the projects will sell the power generated directly on the wholesale market.
