SFD signs a US$240m loan agreement for Pakistan’s 800 MW Mohmand Dam project

The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) has signed a US$240m loan agreement to support Pakistan's Mohmand Multipurpose Dam project, which includes an 800 MW hydropower plant. The project, located in the Mohmand district (north-western Pakistan), aims to improve the country's energy security and increase sustainable water supply for agriculture and human consumption. The project is co-financed by the Saudi Fund for Development, OPEC, Islamic Development Bank, and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, is currently under construction and is expected to be commissioned in 2025.

In 2021, hydro represented 25% of Pakistan’s installed capacity with 10 GW and 21% of the country’s power generation with 31 TWh. Pakistan targets 60% of renewables in its installed capacity by 2030, half of which will be hydropower.
