SECI unveils winners of its tender to develop 1.5 GW of solar projects across India

The Indian company SECI has unveiled the winners of its auction to procure 1,500 MW of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS)-connected solar power projects across India. JSW, Sunsure, and UPC Renewables quoted the lowest tariff of INR2.56/kWh (US$3.1c/kWh) and were awarded 700 MW, 300 MW, and 250 MW, respectively. In addition, NTPC Renewable Energy won 250 MW at a tariff of INR2.57/kWh.

The tender was originally floated in December 2023. The scope of development also includes identifying suitable land, installing and owning the project, and securing connectivity and requisite approvals for interconnection with the ISTS network/State Transmission Utility (STU) or intra-state transmission system (InSTS) network, to supply power to SECI.

At the end of 2022, solar and wind accounted for 22% of installed capacity in India, with respectively 63 GW and 42 GW, while hydropower capacity surpassed 51 GW. India plans to increase its non-fossil fuel capacity to 500 GW.
