SE completes commissioning test of Mochovce-3 nuclear unit (Slovakia)

Slovakia power group Slovenské Elektrárne (SE) has completed the hot testing phase of the 440 MW Mochovce-3 nuclear power plant and the unit could be ready for fuel loading in summer 2019. Commissioning was expected in late 2019, but could be delayed to 2020, as the licensing process could take up to 8 months between technical readiness for fuel loading to the actual date of fuel loading.

SE is building two 440 MW reactors at its Mochovce nuclear power plant and the second reactor is expected to be commissioned in late 2020 or 2021. The project is suffering significant delays and cost escalation, as the project was expected to be commissioned in 2012-2013 at a cost of €2bn, later revised to €5.4bn in 2017, including €1.5bn related to post-Fukushima safety measures. The project is carried out by Slovakia main power utility Slovenske Elektrarne (34% state-owned, 33% Enel, 33% Czech energy group EPH). Under a December 2015 agreement, Enel will sell its remaining 33% stake in Slovenske Elektrarne to EPH after the completion of the nuclear project; EPH would eventually sell 17% of its stake in Slovenske Elektrarne to the government.
