SCCL will add an 800 MW power unit to the Jaipur coal-fired plant in India

India’s Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) will add a new 800 MW power unit at the 1.2 GW Jaipur coal-fired power plant, located in Mancherial, in the state of Telangana (central India), to meet the growing power demand in the state. The company plans to float tenders for the additional unit in January 2023 and expects construction to begin in March 2023.

SCCL, jointly owned by the Indian government and the Telangana state government, commissioned the first two 600 MW units for the super critical coal-fired power plant in 2016. The power plant has produced 52 TWh since its commissioning, which represents about 12% of the energy needs of the state of Telangana.

Coal remains a major energy source as it dominates India’s electricity mix, with an installed capacity of 239 GW and accounting for 72% of the the country’s 1,700 TWh of power generation in 2021 (around 1,200 TWh generated in 2021 from coal and lignite).
