Saudi Arabia sets a 10% renewables power generation target by 2023

The Saudi Arabia government is implementing its Vision 2030 programme and aims to produce 10% of its power from renewable sources by 2023, which accounts for 30 solar and wind projects with an expected installed capacity of 9.5 GW. This plan is expected to require investments reaching between US$30bn and US$50bn.

The development of this 9.5 GW future capacity will be organized under the framework of an official plan called Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP).

It will be managed by the newly created Saudi Arabia Renewable Energy Development Office (REPDO), part of the Ministry of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources. It includes major energy players such as Saudi Aramco, Saudi Electric Company and King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy.

A 700 MW tender was already launched in April 2017 and the REPDO has shortlisted 27 companies to submit proposals for a 300 MW solar PV tender out of 128 applications and 24 companies for a 400 MW wind park.
