Saudi Arabia seeks bidders for 5.3 GW of solar and wind capacity

The Saudi Power Procurement Company has issued a Request for Qualification (RFQ) for the seventh round of solar and wind projects under the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), which is overseen by the Saudi Ministry of Energy.

This round aims to add a total of 5.3 GW of renewable energy capacity to the national grid. On the solar side, the projects include four photovoltaic independent power producers (IPPs), namely the 1.4 GW Tabrjal project, the Mawqaq and Tathleeth projects (600 MW each), and the 500 MW South Al-Ula, located in the Al-Jouf, Hail, Aseer, and Madinah regions respectively. Additionally, two wind IPPs are planned in the Madinah region, with capacities of 1.3 GW (Bilghah) and 900 MW (Shagran).

These new projects align with Saudi Arabia’s broader NREP target of achieving 58.7 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030—including 40 GW of solar and 16 GW of wind. At the end of 2024, the country had installed over 91 GW of capacity, predominantly fossil fuel‑based, with only about 4.7 GW coming from renewable sources.
