Saudi Arabia launches a 400 MW wind tender round in the Al Jouf region

The Renewable Energy Project Development Office (REPDO), of the Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources has announced the request for qualification (RFG) regarding a 400 MW wind power tender in Dumat Al Jandal (Al Jouf region, Saudi Arabia). The interested companies can apply until August 2017 and the process will be closed in January 2018. The project will be backed by 25 and 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) and bidders for both projects are required to meet local content targets.

This wind project fits in the framework of the Saudi Arabian National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), by which the government is implementing its Vision 2030 programme and aims to produce 10% of its power from renewable sources by 2023 (around 30 solar and wind projects with an expected installed capacity of 9.5 GW). 3.45 GW are already planned for 2020 under the framework of the National Transformation Program (NTP).

This programme is expected to require investments reaching between US$30bn and US$50bn. As for the regulatory side, it will be managed by the REPDO and includes major energy players such as Saudi Aramco, Saudi Electric Company and King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy.

The REPDO already launched a first 700 MW tender in April 2017 and shortlisted 27 companies to submit proposals for a 300 MW solar PV tender in Sakaka (Saudi Arabia) out of 128 applications and 24 companies.
