The AP1000 Sanmen-2 nuclear reactor, which is currently under construction in the Chinese Zhejiang province, has completed the cold hydrostatic testing phase of its primary circuit. The unit is being developed by the Chinese state-held State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC), which is one of the country's main operators of nuclear power plants.
The Sanmen nuclear project consists of two Westinghouse AP1000 1,000 MW units under construction. Sanmen-1 is expected to begin operating later in 2017, while Sanmen-2 is expected to start up in 2018. Westinghouse had received authorisation to build four AP1000 reactors in China, two at Sanmen and two at Haiyang (Shandong province).
SNTPC was created in May 2007. In May 2015, State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) was established through the merger of SNPTC and China Power Investment Corporation. SNTPC is now a subsidiary of SPIC and is promoting the construction of the Westinghouse AP1000 units in China as an EPC contractor.
