RWE wins tender for an offshore wind plant in Germany with zero-subsidy bid

RWE Renewables Offshore, a subsidiary of the German energy group RWE, has won a tender to develop a 980 MW offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. The proposed wind farm, which will be located in the N-7.2 zone of the North Sea, will be built without government subsidies under a zero-cent bid scheme.

The result was announced by Germany’s Federal Network Agency, which said the tender award goes hand in hand with the right to a grid connection, financed by the electricity consumer via the grid fees, and the opportunity to operate the offshore wind farm for over 25 years. In addition, the winner has the right to apply to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency ( BSH ) for planning approval for the development of the area with an offshore wind project. The plant should be commissioned by 2027.

The Swedish power utility Vattenfall, which also participated in this tender, holds the step-in rights for the N-7.2 zone. Vattenfall holds these step-in rights through the Atlantis 1 and Global Tech 2 offshore wind projects. The company has until 31 October 2022 to exercise its step-in rights by matching RWE’s bid.
