RWE will build a 400 MW/800 MWh BESS in Lingen (Germany)

The German energy group RWE has made the final decision to invest in the construction of a 400 MW/800 MWh BESS on the former premises of Dralon, northeast of the Emsland gas-fired power plant, in Lingen (Germany). All the necessary permits for the work have been obtained and construction work will start on 2 February 2026. The BESS facility will house more than 200 lithium-ion battery units. When commissioned in 2028, it will provide balancing energy to stabilise the electricity grid. It also features the technology necessary to provide new grid services such as instantaneous reserve (inertia).
