RWE and Ørsted submit bids in New York’s fifth offshore wind solicitation (US)

The US New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has received the final project proposals for its fifth offshore wind solicitation (NY5).

Community Offshore Wind, the joint venture of RWE and National Grid Ventures (NGV), has submitted the 2.8 GW Community Offshore Wind project, set to be built in two phases in the 510 km2 New York Bight wind energy area (WEA). The project is planned to start commercial operations by 2030 and both phases should be completed by 2032. In addition, Ørsted has proposed its 1,485 MW Long Island Wind project, which is expected to generate enough energy to power one million homes once it becomes operational in 2033.

In early October 2024, Vineyard Offshore also submitted a proposal for a 1,350 MW offshore wind project, Excelsior Wind. A fourth proposed project, the 1,275 MW Attentive Energy project proposed by TotalEnergies, Corio Generation and Rise Light & Power, has withdrawn.

In July 2024, the NYSERDA launched its fifth offshore wind solicitation (NY5) to procure Offshore Wind Renewable Energy Certificates (ORECs), results are scheduled to be published in early 2025. New York aims to achieve a zero-emission electricity sector by 2040, including 70% renewable energy generation by 2030, and develop 9 GW of offshore wind by 2035.
