Russian and Chinese state-owned nuclear corporations Rosatom and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) have signed an agreement for the construction of four new VVER-1200 nuclear units in China. Two units would be built at a greenfield site in Xudabao and two at the existing Tianwan nuclear power plant (Tianwan-7 and Tianwan-8). Rosatom would supply the reactors and the associated equipment for the projects. Initial contracts between the two companies were signed in November 2018 regarding the implementation of the framework agreements.
The Tianwan facility already includes the Tianwan-1 and Tianwan-2 units (990 MW each), which were commissioned in 2007. The third and fourth reactors, rated 1,060 MW and 990 MW, respectively, were commissioned in 2018. Two additional reactors (Tianwan-5 and 6), rated 1,000 MW each, are under construction and expected expected to enter commercial operation in 2021 and 2022, respectively. The 7th and 8th units would add 1,000 MW each. The Tianwan nuclear power plant is operated by the Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation, a joint venture between China National Nuclear Corporation (50%), China Power Investment Corporation (30%) and Jiangsu Guoxin Group (20%).
The Xudabao nuclear project should include six 1,000 MW units (Chinese-designed CAP1000 reactors were initially planned). The project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in January 2011.
