Rosatom completes concrete works at Rooppur-1 nuclear project (Bangladesh)

Russian state-run nuclear corporation Rosatom has completed concrete works for the turbine hall foundation slab of the 1,080 MWe (1,200 MWe gross) Rooppur-1 Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) project, which is currently under construction in Bangladesh. The unit will be a modified version of the NPP-2006 VVER-1200 and will be built on the eastern bank of the river Ganges at Rooppur.

The nuclear plant will comprise two units with a combined capacity of 2,400 MWe. Rosatom started the construction of Rooppur-1 in November 2017 while the second unit broke ground in July 2018. The commissioning of the two reactors is planned respectively for 2023 and 2024. The entire project is worth US$12.65bn and Russia will provide a US$11.38bn credit facility to cover up 90% of the costs. It is projected to generate 10% of Bangladesh's power generation upon completion and will be crucial in improving the country's power supply security.
