Rhode Island (US) will issue RFP for 1.2 GW of offshore wind capacity

The US utility Rhode Island Energy will issue a new Request for Proposals (RFP) to develop about 1.2 GW of new offshore wind capacity in the US State of Rhode Island. Rhode Island Energy is expected to issue the RFP during the course of October 2023, with proposals being due in early 2024. Selection will potentially be made in the summer of 2024.

In July 2022, the Governor of Rhode Island signed into law a clean energy legislation that seeks to expand Rhode Island’s offshore wind energy resource. In October 2022, Rhode Island Energy issued an RFP for 600 MW to 1 GW of offshore wind capacity in the State.

At the federal level, the United States aims for 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035 (only 42 MW were operational at the end of 2022).
