Queensland (Australia) shortlists 10 renewable+BESS projects for 400 MW tender

The government of Queensland (Australia) has shortlisted 10 renewable + battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects from its Renewables 400 auction, which aims to deploy 400 MW of renewable power capacity and 100 MW of energy storage. The 10 selected projects have a combined capacity of nearly 2.2 GW and include 2 standalone wind parks (540 MW McIntyre wind project developed by Acciona and worth over AUD1bn (US$0.7bn), and 200 MW Lakeland wind project developed by Windlab), five solar+storage projects and 3 hybrid renewable projects. Major projects include the 800 MW Clarke Creek wind power plant with BESS proposed by Goldwind Australia, Edify Energy's 200 MW Majors Creek solar and storage project and Neoen Australia's 130 MW Kaban wind project coupled with a 100 MW BESS.

Selected projects will be in competitive biding to compose the power portfolio of CleanCo, Queensland’s third publicly-owned electricity generator. CleanCo is a new state-owned power generation company that will, as of October 2019, own the 570 MW Wivenhoe pumped storage hydropower plant, the 385 MW gas-fired Swanbank E power plant and the Kareeya, Barron Gorge and Koombooloomba hydropower plants. Assets were previously owned by state-owned Stanwell and CS Energy.

The tender is part of the AUD 1.16bn (US$810m) Powering Queensland Plan, which aims to reach 50% renewable energy by 2030 and to diversify energy sources.
