Powergrid wins tender for a 5.5 GW transmission project in Rajasthan (India)

The Power Grid Corporation of India (Powergrid or PGCIL) has won a tender launched by PFC Consulting to evacuate 5.5 GW of renewable energy from the Jaisalmer/Barmer complex located in the Indian State of Rajasthan. The project comprises the establishment of a new 765/400/220kV Barmer-I Pooling substation, 765 kV and 400 kV DC transmission lines, and associated bay extension works at other existing substations in Rajasthan. The project is expected to be commissioned by 2026.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Solar Energy Corporation of India has identified 181.5 GW of Renewable Energy Zones (REZs) in eight states. This includes 75 GW of REZ potential in Rajasthan, comprising 15 GW of wind and 60 GW of solar.

India plans to connect 35 GW of solar and wind energy capacity to its grid during the fiscal year 2024-2025, and plans to eventually increase its non-fossil fuel capacity to 500 GW. At the end of 2023, solar and wind accounted for nearly 24% of installed capacity in India, with respectively 73 GW and 45 GW.
