Portugal initiates a 700 MW solar tender

The Directorate-General of Energy and Geology (DGEG) of Portugal has launched a 700 MW auction for large scale solar projects. The bid submission period will end on 31 July 2020. The auction was initially expected in January 2020 but was postponed to March 2020 and then suspended due to the pandemic.

The first renewable tender in Portugal was held in August 2019 and attracted 64 participants bidding for over 10,000 MW of new solar capacity. It awarded 25 solar power projects across 24 lots allocating 1,150 MW of power projects, including 862 MW of projects securing 15-year fixed-price power purchase agreements (PPAs) and 288 MW of project receiving payments at a variable tariff.

The National Energy Strategy 2020 (NES 2020) plans to increase the share of renewables to 60% of power production and to 31% of final energy consumption in 2020. As of June 2020, 832 MW of solar capacity was operational, accounting for less than 4% of the existing power plants, 221 MW were under construction and another 134 MW under development.
