Port of Rotterdam (Netherlands) joins the North Sea Wind Power Hub

The Port of Rotterdam has joined the North Sea Wind Power Hub consortium, which already comprises TenneT subsidiaries in Netherlands and Germany, Energinet (Denmark) and Gasunie (Netherlands). The consortium is developing the concept of a post-2030 European energy system in northwest Europe and the five partners will be moving forward with feasibility studies, expected to lead to the development of the hub from 2030 onwards.

The consortium was created by TenneT and Energinet in March 2017 and the idea behind the project is to build one or several islands (so called "Power Link Islands") in the middle of the North Sea, at the Dogger Bank. The Power Link Islands will enable the connection of 70 GW to 100 GW of offshore wind parks and will be interconnected through direct current (DC) lines to the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Norway and Belgium. These transmission cables will also function as interconnectors between the energy markets of the North Sea countries. So far, the consortium estimates that the Power Link island-based solution will be 30% more cost-effective than HVDC converter platforms on individual jackets.
