Poland awards 2.2 GW of onshore wind in auctions

The Polish Energy Regulatory Office (URE) has received bids for the solar PV and wind auctions it has organised in early December 2019. URE has received 164 bids in the joint onshore wind and solar sale for projects over 1 MW. In total, 101 projects obtained PLN16.2bn (€3.8bn) in total, with almost all the amount (PLN16.1bn, €3.8bn) for onshore wind, corresponding to 2.2 GW of capacity. Solar projects will receive PLN129m (US$30m). Proposals ranged from PLN163/MWh (€38.3/MWh) to PLN233/MWh (€54.7/MWh), with an average price of PLN208/MWh (€48.8/MWh).

State support takes the form of contracts for difference (CfD), with payments equal to the gap between the auction price offered by the projects and the market electricity price. The financial support is provided for the winners of auctions over 15 years from the date of the first sale of electricity, and not longer than until 31 December 2035. Only the projects which already obtained a construction permit and a connection to the grid were allowed to participate to the auction.

According to its revised Energy Policy to 2040, Poland ambitions to reduce the share of coal in the power mix from 80% to 56-60% in 2030 and to increase the share of renewable to 21-23% (against 27% in the first draft).
