Poland awarded 618 MW of renewable energy through 2023 auctions

The Polish Energy Regulatory Office (URE) has announced the results of the renewable auctions led in 2023, awarding a total of 618 MW out of the 1 GW of capacity originally tendered.

The auction was divided in two categories. The first one was for installations of up to 1 MW (133 successful offers from 56 producers with a total of 123 MW allocated, all for solar projects, at an average price of PLN414/MWh (€96/MWh). The second one was for projects above 1 MW (67 successful offers, 471 MW for solar and 24.5 for onshore wind); the reference price for the second category was of PLN389/MWh (€89.8/MWh) for solar power plants and PLN 324/MWh (€74.8/MWh) for wind. The winners should receive governmental support over a 15-year period. There where five more auctions dedicated to hydropower, biomass and agricultural and non-agricultural biogas, but they received an insufficient number of bids.

In 2022, Poland generated a total of 179 TWh, dominated by coal and lignite with 70%, followed by wind (10%), gas (7%) and solar (5%). For 2030, Poland targets 23% of renewables in final energy consumption and 32% in power generation. In 2040, the objective is to raise the share of renewables in the power mix to 51%.
