The Philippines awards 3.6 GW of renewable projects in undersubscribed tender

The Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) has selected a total of 3.6 GW of renewable energy projects to be built across the Philippines under its Green Energy Auction round 2 (GEA-2), awarding 2.1 GW of solar PV and 1.5 GW of onshore wind. The tender was largely undersubscribed, as the DOE auctioned only 30% of what it offered. Indeed, GEA-2 originally offered 11.6 GW capacity, with 3.6 GW to be installed in 2024, 3.6 GW in 2025 and 4.4 GW in 2026.

For this round, the DOE selected 105 winning bids. A total of 2 GW ground mounted PV and 9.4 MW rooftop PV capacity were awarded in the regions of Luzon, Mindanao and the Visayas. Only one floating solar project was selected with a 90 MW capacity in Luzon. The winning projects are expected to come online between 2024 and 2026. As for onshore wind, the DOE selected 1.5 GW, expected to come online in 2025 and 2026. All selected bidders will sign contracts for a 20-year power supply.
