PGE wins an auction for an up to 1.2 GW offshore wind site off Poland

Poland’s Ministry of Infrastructure has announced the results of its offshore wind site lease auction for the 60.E.3 area, located in the Baltic Sea about 78 km off the Polish coast, which was awarded to Elektrownia Wiatrowa Baltica 1, a subsidiary of Poland’s PGE Baltica. The area, directly adjacent to PGE’s 900 MW Baltica 1 project, covers 143 km2 and has a potential capacity of 1,185 MW.

This is the second lease area permit that the company has secured offshore Poland after the 43.E.1 area earlier in January 2023, which has a potential of 990 MW and where PGE intends to develop its Baltica 4 project. EDF Renewable Offshore Polska I, Cordeneos (RWE), and POW (Polish Offshore Wind) were among other applicants who also qualified for the 60.E.3 and 43.E.1 site auctions.

PGE plans to build at least 6.5 GW of generation capacity in the Baltic Sea by 2040. Other than the Baltica 1 and 4 projects, the group is also developing the 2.5 GW Baltica 2 and 3 projects. PGE is bidding for 8 of the 11 concessions that Poland plans to award in the second round of proceedings for permits. Earlier in January 2023, the Polish government declined to award a lease for the 53.E.1 site, considering that none of the bidders had obtained the minimum qualification.
