Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), a fully-owned subsidiary of Pertamina, Indonesia's national oil and gas company, plans to invest US$2.29bn in the development of eight geothermal power plants. The eight plants will have a combined capacity of 655 MW and will raise PGE's geothermal capacity over 1 GW. The projects include the development of 110 MW Ulubelu-3-4, 110 MW Lumut Balai-1-2, 110 MW Lumut Balai-3, 440 MW Lahendong-5-6, 30 MW Karaha-1, 35 MW Kamojang-5, 110 MW Hululais-1-2 and 110 MW Sunga Penuh-1-2. Some projects will also receive international financing assistance, such as the Lumut Balai-1-2 (backed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)) or the Ulubelu and Lahendong projects (backed by the World Bank). PGE aims to commission the plants within 5 to 8 years. Kamojang-5 could be completed as early as August 2015.
PGE aims to increase its power generation capacity to 2.3 GW by 2025, or about 27% of the government’s planned 2025 national geothermal energy capacity of 8.6 GW.
