Panama unveils 2025-2028 renewable energy tenders calendar (1.3 GW)

The Panamanian Government has unveiled its Annual Schedule of Tenders for the Electricity Sector for the 2025-2028 period, planning to incorporate 1,420 MW of firm energy and 1,335 MW of new installed capacity to come online between 2029 and 2033.

In October 2025, the country plans to contract 35 MW of new wind and hydro for a 20-year period starting in January 2029; a round is scheduled for January 2026 for 250 MW of converted thermal power to alternative fuels as of May 2028 (10 years), while 550 MW will also be allocated among existing power plants in May 2026 (15 years as of July 2027). An exclusive tender is planned in July 2026 to allocate 250 MW of solar capacity (15 years as of July 2028). Finally, in October 2027, the country expects to allocate 250 MW for new power plants of any technology (15 years as of January 2031).

The schedule plans to provide predictability for bidders, to encourage new investments and foster competition while providing for the needs of the system and contribute to Panama’s decarbonisation objectives. The country targets 1.7 GW of distributed renewables by 2030.
