Pakistan's 1.2 GW Balloki gas-fired plant comes onstream

Pakistan's National Power Parks Management Company (NPPMCL) has commissioned the 1,223 MW Balloki CCGT project in Punjab (Pakistan) after completing all the required tests. The power plant broke ground in November 2015 and was built with an investment of US$882m. This is the second gas-fired project developed by NPPMCL after the Haveli Bahadur Shah (HBS) power plant, which came online in May 2018.

General Electric (GE) supplied two 9HA gas turbines, an Alstom steam turbine and associated equipment for the plant. TNB Remaco, a subsidiary of Malaysian power company Tenaga Nasional Berhad, has been awarded the operations and maintenance (O&M) contract.

The Balloki project, along with the 1.2 GW Bhikki CCGT project in Mandi Bahauddin (Punjab, commissioned in May 2018) and the Haveli Bahadur Shah (HBS) power plant, are part of the Pakistan government's strategy to add a total of up to 3,600 MW to the national grid and to raise access to electricity to over 90% of the population.
