Pakistan's Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) has invited bids to develop 600 MW of solar PV projects, which will be built in the Kot Addu and Muzaffargargh districts, in the Punjab Province (eastern Pakistan). Selected bidders will develop the solar plants under a build, own, and operate transfer (BOOT) basis and will enter a 25-year concession term. The deadline to submit bids, which was originally set for 17 April 2023, has been pushed back to 8 May 2023. The successful bidders will have to obtain approval from the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency before they are issued a generation license from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
In 2021, solar represented about 3% of Pakistan’s installed capacity with nearly 1.1 GW but less than 1% of its power generation with 1.2 TWh. Pakistan targets a share of 30% of wind and solar in power capacity and 60% of clean energy in power generation by 2030. In 2020, Pakistan also announced its intention to reach 27 GW of solar capacity by 2047. In January 2023, the Pakistani Government decided to solarise all public buildings of federal ministries as the first step of its solarisation project.
