Pakistan breaks ground on the 800 MW Mohmand hydropower project

The government of Pakistan has officially broken ground on the 800 MW Mohmand dam project (previously known as Munda), which will be built on the Swat river (Pakistan) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The PKR309bn (approximately US$2.2bn) project will be commissioned in July 2024 and operated by the state-run power utility Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA). It will have an estimated power production of 2.9 TWh/year.

Pakistan plans to raise the share of hydropower in the power mix to 30% by 2030, which would translate into an overall share of renewable energy of 60% in the power mix by 2030. WAPDA is also moving ahead with other large hydropower projects and commissioned in particular the 969 MW Neelum Jhelum hydropower project (NJHP) in Azad Jammu and Kashmir in August 2018 and synchronized the third and last unit of the 1,410 MW Tarbela-4 extension hydropower project with the domestic power grid in October 2018.
