The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (United States) has received several bids from project developers as part of its second request for proposals under New Jersey's Offshore Wind Strategic Plan. The state seeks to award between 1,200 MW and 2,400 MW of offshore wind energy projects; the application period started on 10 September 2020 and ended on 10 December 2020.
Ørsted has submitted a bid to develop its Ocean Wind 2 offshore wind project, whose size was not disclosed. The group was already won the first New Jersey's offshore wind solicitation in June 2019 and is developing the 1,100 MW Ocean Wind offshore wind project, whose commissioning expected in 2024. Earlier in December 2020, New Jersey’s Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) exercised its option right to acquire a 25% stake in the project.
In addition, Atlantic Shores, a 50-50 joint venture between EDF Renewables and Shell New Energies, has also submitted its proposal to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to supply the state with up to 2,300 MW of offshore wind energy. Commissioning is scheduled in 2027.
In September 2020, the state-government approved the final New Jersey Offshore Wind Strategic Plan, to develop 7.5 GW of offshore wind power by 2035. The plan determines infrastructure projects (including transmission networks), and protection measures for the fishing industry among other things. The programme is expected to contribute to the New Jersey state's goal to achieve 50% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% by 2050, including 23% from offshore wind power.
