The Canadian Province of Ontario has announced plans to expand its Bruce nuclear power plant, located near Kincardine on the shores of Lake Huron. The new construction, which would be located adjacent to Bruce Power's current facility, is expected to have a capacity of 4.8 GW, nearly doubling the nuclear plant’s capacity and producing enough electricity to supply 4.8 million Canadian households. The expansion would be Canada’s first large-scale nuclear plant construction in more than 30 years.
The Bruce nuclear plant currently has eight reactors. Bruce-1 and Bruce-2 (779 MW each), originally commissioned in 1977, were refurbished in 2012. The remaining six reactors, all commissioned between 1978 and 1987, total a capacity of about 4.8 GW. They are set to be refurbished as well, with the refurbishment of unit 6 having started in 2020. The programme will allow the plant to continue operating until 2064. The plant supplies about 30% of Ontario’s power consumption.
As of end-2022, nuclear represented 9% of Canada’s installed capacity with about 13.6 GW and 13% of its power generation with 87.2 TWh.
