ONEE plans to invest US$2.7bn in the Moroccan power sector by 2023

ONEE (Office national de l’électricité et de l’eau potable), Morocco's national power and water company, has announced a MAD 51.6bn (US$5.4bn) investment programme over the 2019-2023 period, including MAD 26.1bn (US$2.7bn) in the power sector. A total of MAD 8.6bn (US$895m) will be invested in power generation, to add 4,262 MW of new capacity, including the 22 MW Dakhla diesel-fired power plant and 4,240 MW of renewable capacity. Most of the renewable power capacity will come from solar power plants (2,015 MW, including 120 MW Noor PV Tafilalt, 200 MW Noor PV Atlas, 400 MW Noor PV II, and 795 MW Noor Midelt). More than 1,650 MW of wind capacity will be installed by 2023, including 200 MW at Koudia Baida, 200 MW at Jbel Lahdid and 300 MW at Boujdour, plus 350 MW of pumped-storage capacity at Abdelmoumen and 200 MW of small-hydropower projects. After 2023, the Jerada coal-fired power plant will be expanded by another 350 MW (by 2025) and renewable capacities will continue to increase and should exceed the national target of 52% of renewable energy sources in the power mix by 2030 (12% from hydropower and 20% each for solar and wind). ONEE also plans to invest MAD 8.7bn (US$910m) in its power transmission network, MAD 4.2bn (US$440m) in power distribution and MAD 1bn (US$105m) in rural electrification.
