OMVS and SinoHydro sign deal on 294 MW Koukoutamba hydro project (Guinea)

The intergovernmental development organisation OMVS (Organisation pour la mise en valeur du fleuve Sénégal) and Chinese state-owned hydropower engineering and construction company Sinohydro have signed a commercial contract regarding the construction of the 294 MW Koukoutamba hydropower plant, which is set to be built on the Bafing river, an affluent of the Senegal river, in Guinea.

Sinohydro won the call for tenders for Koukoutamba's construction in March 2015 and its main competitor at that time was China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC). The project's completion will be supported via a US$812m loan brought by the Chinese bank Exim. Construction works will start once the loan is received and are currently expected for mid-2019, while the commissioning is slated for 2023. Besides, the project will also require the construction of two 225 kV power lines, which will span across 600 km, connecting the power plant and the city of Conakry.

The OMVS was set up in 1972 for the purpose of jointly managing the Senegal River and its drainage basin. Its main task is to enable a shared management of the Senegal water resources among the neighbouring countries, i.e. Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania and Mali.
