Oman’s Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP) has shortlisted 12 bidders for an onshore wind tender which will see the development of five projects, totalling about 1 GW, across the country. These developers notably include ACWA Power, Sembcorp, Sumitomo, TotalEnergies, Masdar, Al Fanar, Elecnor, Goldwind, Itochu, Gulf Energy Development and Marafiq, EDF Renouvelables, and Hero Asia Investment.
The developers will compete to develop five wind projects: Mahoot-I (342-400 MW); Duqm Wind IPP (234-270 MW) ; Dhofar-II (114-132 MW); Jaalan Bani Bu Ali (91-105 MW) ; and Sadah Wind IPP (81-99 MW). All projects are expected to be commissioned by 2027.
Nama, the only offtaker of power from independent power plants in Oman, originally received statements for qualifications from 16 international and local developers for the projects.
As of end-2023, Oman only has 50 MW of wind capacity, representing less than 1% of the country’s total capacity. Oman plans to reach 30% of renewable energy in its total electricity production mix by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
