Oman Power and Water Procurement (OPWP) Company has prequalified 8 applicants for the development of two solar Independent Power Projects (IPPs) in Oman, namely Manah Solar I and Manah Solar II. The 8 pre-qualified bidders are the following: a consortium of Masdar (United Arab Emirates) and EDF (France); a consortium of Eni (Italy) and Softbank Energy (Japan); Acwa Power (Saudi Arabia); Jinko (China); a consortium of Korea Western Power Company (South Korea), Hanyang Corporation (South Korea), Solar Reserve Limited (United States) and Nafath Renewable Energy (Oman); Marubeni (Japan); Power Construction Corporation of China; a consortium of TagEnergy (Nigeria) and Al-Shanfari Group (Oman); and Total Solar International (France). The projects will each have a power generation capacity of 500 MW to 600 MW (combined capacity of up to 1.2 GW) and are expected to be awarded in the third quarter of 2020 and to start operations in the fourth quarter of 2022 and in 2023.
Oman aims at generating 10% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025. In March 2019, a consortium of ACWA Power, Kuwait's Gulf Investment Corporation and Alternative Energy Projects Company won a US$400m bid to build the 500 MW Ibri-2 solar project for OPWP. The project will be developed under the IPP model and will start commercial operations in early 2021.
