NYPA opens calls to develop at least 1 GW of new nuclear capacity (US)

The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has announced two solicitations to develop at least 1 GW of advanced nuclear energy in Upstate New York, United States (NYPA, 01/06/2026). As part of the announcement, the NYPA issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for experienced nuclear developers and delivery partners interested in building 1 GW of new nuclear capacity via large-scale reactors and/or small modular reactors. To qualify for federal tax credits, the firms must be able to start construction works before 2033. The second solicitation is a Request for Applications inviting New York-based training providers to apply for USD40m funding for nuclear workforce development.

These actions support New York’s 5 GW Nuclear Reliability plan announced in 2026 that would boost the 3.4 GW of existing nuclear power to about 8.4 GW. At the end of 2025, the US had a total nuclear capacity of 104 GW, representing around 7% of the country’s total capacity (Enerdata’s Global Energy Research.)
